Indigenous ‘Technology’ and ‘Science’ through Art Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House
OCT 1, 2016 12pm - 2pm Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House | 800 East Broadway FREE | No registration required Explore Indigenous forms of technology and science, highlighting the ancient and contemporary skills of people who survived and lived using tools and the land. Draw on wood with artist and carver Randy Tait and take a carvers journey exploring the lines and forms of animals in Northwest Coast style art. You’ll come to appreciate woodworks contemporary and old, and the ancient knowledge that goes with it! In conjunction, visit with an artist Cease Wyss as she shares her knowledge of the science of traditional medicinal plants used in this territory. Draw them in detail to learn to identify the plants and their uses.
Participants of all ages and experience are welcome.
Cease Wyss - Cease is a media artist with close to 25 years experience in this field. She has produced various formats of media art, as well as being a mentor in her field for close to 15 years. She is also an ethno-botanist, traditionally trained in this field by Indigenous Elders. Her work involves site-specific and culturally focused teaching with storytelling as her means to sharing knowledge. Cease is Squamish and Sts’ailes ancestry.
Randy is from the Nisga’a / Gitksan Nation and from the Drumming Grouse/ Killer Whale clan. In 1982 Randy studied under master carvers, Walter Harris, Earl Muldoe, Vernon Stevens and Ken Mowatt at K’san carving school in Hazleton, B.C. He completed an intense 2-year wood carving courses. He learnt the traditions of his ancestors of how to respect, treat and carve wood. Working mainly with yellow and red cedar Randy learned how to carve totem poles, masks, feast bowls, paddles, plaques, etc… that tell stories of his peoples rich heritage.
