Slip/Spin: From Studio to Gallery at Satellite Gallery
Immerse yourself in the worlds of mark making and pottery from the artist’s studio to the gallery. In conjunction with Satellite Gallery’s current exhibition of West Coast studio pottery, High Fire Culture, view sketches and studies made by potters at a special open house at the Dunbar Pottery Studio for Vancouver Draw Down. Later in the day, visit Satellite Gallery to observe and draw potter Ron Vallis throwing pots on a Leach style kick-wheel.
The creative work of the potters in High Fire Culture is linked to the approach of English potter Bernard Leach, who from the 1920s to late 1960s was well known for his sensitive line drawings done on paper and on clay. Leach’s skill as an etcher and print maker brought him to Japan where he was introduced to the potter’s art. High Fire Culture features over one hundred retrospective pots, as well as a collection of educational and archival material including historical photographs, videos, reference books, drawings, and a Leach kick-wheel. |
